Massage technique

With your partner lying face-down (and perhaps a small pillow under her or his head, and a rolled small towel under the ankles (to elevate the foot slightly) put some oil into your hands. Back massaging

Start with the high back, rubbing with flat hands in circles (the left hand circling counter-clockwise and the right hand clockwise). This is a relaxing stroke and you can move both lower or higher. Keep your hand well oiled until your partner’s skin (as well as your own) has stopped “drinking” the oil. As you move higher and lower with this stoke, you can now move both hands in the same direction.

As you continue, you can include the whole of the back, and how your circling strokes become the swimming stroke. These are very large a movements beginning at the small of your partner’s back and finishing at the nape of the neck. You can continue like this for some minutes, and you will give a great pleasure to your partner; who will begin to melt beneath you.

The shoulders and neck

You next work on the shoulder and neck with the flat of your thumbs and even kneading (as if you were kneading dough for bread). Continue for a few minutes.

Buttocks & Legs

Work your way down now to your partner’s buttocks. Use the kneading technique at first, and then end with small circling. Work at the cleavage of the buttocks, and on the inside of the thigh, but do not actually touch your partner’s anus or gentiles. Come as close as you can without doing so, and tease this areas with feathery strokes.

Quickly move down each leg, massaging with the kneading movement, then the circling. Now go to each foot. Apply more oil and rub and massage each part of the foot, each toe even. Place special emphasis on the sole, and use your thumbs to massage the ball of the foot and then arch.

Asking your partner to turn over, work your way up the leg to the hips. Be careful to NOT touch the genital area, but only come as close as is possible. This is like scratching a mosquito bite, but around the bite, and not directly on it.

The front of the body

Lift your partner slightly from the small of the back two or three times. Then on your partner’s abdomen, do large swimming stokes, and keep this up for at least 3 to 4 minutes. This area will ignite the sexual centers, and create a great desire for sexual union with your partner; but do not yield till you are finished giving the massage.

Continue with small circling movements on the chest or breast of your partner, and then move to the next with light pressuring movements only. Go behind your partner now and work on his or her face from behind. Do very light massage, not neglecting the lips, and eyes. Move to the sides of the forehead, and then end with the earlobes. There are great sexual centers (used also by acupressurists) there, and end with light pressure to each lobe.

You end the massage now on the whole of your partner’s body with the back of the hands, using only the tips of the fingernails in as light and long stokes as possible.

Let’s take a few moments to reflect on the social ramifications of the Kama Sutra on Victorian culture in Great Britain.

From A Publishing Standpoint

From the publishers standpoint, the ancient Sanskrit text has been a glowing success. This is easily evidenced by the many translators who have took upon themselves, the task of rewriting and compiling the manuscript for the masses to enjoy. The first such translator for the English language was Sir Richard F. Burton, a British explorer who spoke no less than twenty-five languages fluently. When he discovered the text upon one of his journeys of exploration through India in 1842, he became enamored by the book and decided he must translate the text into the language of his peers back in Great Britain so that they too could enjoy the material he was now so fond of. Thirty-four years later, in 1876, Sir Richard Burton had finally finished the work of translating the Kama Sutra with the assistance of his collaborator, Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot, since Sir Burton could not read ancient Sanskrit himself. The first published tomes were still a long way off however.

The Kama Shastra Society

Seven years later, in 1883, the first English copies of the Kama Sutra were published. That first edition consisted of 250 privately published copies of the great manuscript. These copies were published by The Kama Shastra Society, of which Burton himself was a founder. The Kama Shastra Society was created to keep Burton and his peers from being prosecuted and imprisoned by the Society for the Suppression of Vice under the Obscene Publications Act of 1857 and was used by Burton as a method of publishing much of his work over the years. If the society had not been founded, his many endeavors in the field of writing and translation would have been set to the wayside by popular Victorian society of the time, as Burton, himself, was considered to be less than savory by his peers. His translation and writing often dealt with subjects of a erotic or highly sexual nature which was very counter-culture to the Victorian society of the day.

Some of his works that would otherwise be lost to the world today included a translation of The Book of a Thousand Nights and One Night ( Most commonly referred to as The Arabian Nights and considered to be pornography at the time due to sexual content.)and a translation of the Arabic guide called The Perfumed Garden. Sir Richard Burton had written a second translation of the same work which he titled The Scented Garden but this was tragically lost along with several other papers when his widowed wife, Isabel, burned them after his death in October of 1890 from a heart attack. The irony of her destructive action is that Sir Burton had intended this translation to be published after his death as a way of providing for his widow through the proceeds.

The Kama Shastra Society provided for a private publication and distribution of the Kama Sutra to its own member thus circumventing the Obscene Publications Act of 1857 because they could not be prosecuted for sharing a private Society publication amongst its own members. It is interesting to note that Sir Burton’s work did not become legal in Great Britain until the year 1963, eighty years after its first publication and seventy- three years after Burton’s death. What is even more interesting is that a text with absolutely no illustrations was considered so offensive to the British censors.

The Kamasutra is a journey of the life of a man through different sexual stages. The Kamasutra goes as far as saying that only if there is extra-marital sex will there be peace within a marriage.

The sixth book makes man seem more adventurous, primarily because of his diminishing sexual drive. This is the time when the man has earned enough money, and he doesn’t mind squandering a bit of it on carnal pleasures. Man would visit prostitutes and such other women in order to get his pleasures.

In the seventh and the last book, the stage of man after he has lost his sex drive is mentioned. This is when man returns fully to his wife, and engrosses himself in spiritual pursuits. In order to keep his body in good health, he may divert to Ayurveda and Yoga and make the best use of his remaining years on earth.

So this is what the Kamasutra is all about. Naturally, people the world over think that the Kamasutra is only a book about sexual positions, though this is as far from the truth as it can be possible. The Kamasutra is a whole treatise on sex.

In today’s world, the basic argument against the Kamasutra – and a very justified one at that – is that it objectifies women. The entire work treats women as nothing more than sex toys for the male.
