What makes a great Kama Sutra sexual position? The Kama Sutra is very specific about this:
- Both partners should find nirvana
- Both partners should enjoy the pleasure of the other

In this sexual position, the woman can easily find her own pleasure, even with an unskilled or small-sized man, sometimes even with a penis that has trouble reaching erection. Both partners can look at one another easily, enjoying their mutual pleasure. The woman on top is nearly impossible to use in a forcible-sex situation. And a thoughtful man can easily find any number of ways to excite the woman before she allows him to enter her.
But there’s more to it than that. The woman on top position lends itself to a wide variety of variations. Consider the following:
Woman on top sideways: the woman straddles the man, facing him, then takes one leg and places it with the other leg so that both are on the same side. This is a great way to slow orgasm down yet increase stimulation, especially if the woman squeezes her legs together while both are thrusting. Both partners are still free to look into one another’s eyes.
Woman on top, legs extended: the woman stretches her legs out so that they are on either side of the man’s head, on top of his shoulders, and leans back. This allows for very direct stimulation of the G-spot in some women.
Woman on top, man semi-reclining: With the man’s pelvis elevated to some degree, a woman with a high-placed clitoris gets more direct stimulation from both his penis and the pubis just around it.
Woman lying on top: This Kama Sutra sexual position is also called the reverse missionary, and it allows both partners a pleasurable closeness that is rare in sex.
And the standard woman astride: Also called the cowgirl, this has the woman sitting on top of the prone man, with all parts in the predictable positions. This is the basic woman on top position, and is the best Kama Sutra sexual position for bringing most women to orgasm.
